Secrets

Secrets is one of the most common themes shown in Desperate Housewives to date there has been a secret mysterious storyline in all four seasons. The show's secrets are often talked about, discussed and eventually discovered by the four female leads Susan Mayer, Bree Hodge, Lynette Scavo and Gabrielle Solis. There are often minor secrets kept by certain charecters throughout different episodes.

[edit] Season One
In Season 1, the main mystery surrounds the Young Family. The pilot begins with Mary Alice Young committing suicide by shooting herself in the head. Startled by the suicide of their seemingly perfect friend, Bree, Susan, Lynette, and Gabrielle try to discover what caused Mary Alice to do this. Throughout the season they believe that her husband, Paul Young, had something to do with the suicide. Bree tries to uncover facts by forming a bond with Mary Alice and Paul's son, Zach Young. Susan, however, is more persistent in blaming Paul for Mary Alice's suicide and starts to confront him. In the season finale, it is revealed that Zach is not really Mary Alice and Paul's son, but rather the child of a drug addict named Deirdre and Mike Delfino. Deirdre visits Mary Alice (named Angela Forrest at the time), who works at the rehabilitation center she was in, offering an exchange for money (presumably for drugs) in return for her baby, Dana. Mary Alice, unable to conceive a child herself, accepts the offer and she, Paul, and Dana (later renamed Zach) move to Wisteria Lane changing their names so they could not be tracked. However, a couple years later Deirdre returns, seemingly recovered from her past history with drug abuse. She demands her child back, but Mary Alice refuses. After Deirdre begins attacking Paul, Mary Alice stabs her. Deirdre dies and out of panic, Mary Alice cuts up her body and puts it in a toy chest. After one of Mary Alice's neighbors, Martha Huber finds out about Mary Alice's secret from her sister Felicia Tilman who worked with Mary Alice in the rehabilitation center back in Utah, she blackmails Mary Alice with a note reading, "I know what you did. It makes me sick. I'm going to tell." In response, to protect her family, Mary Alice kills herself. After discovering Martha Huber was the one who blackmailed Mary Alice, Paul attacks her and kills her with the same blender she had borrowed from Mary Alice and went to return in the pilot.

The second season mystery focased around the new Applewhite Family who moved into the lane at the end of the first series. The mysterious secret which surronded the family began when Betty Applewhite and her son Matthew Applewhite would not let Edie Britt into the house despite her selling it to them. It was later revealed that Betty and Matthew were keeping a man prisoner in their basement and neighbours often heard screams coming from their house for example Susan had complained to Betty about the noise. It was later revealed that the person they were keeping prisoner was Betty's son and Matthew's younger brother Caleb Applewhite. Caleb soon managed to break out of the basement and he broke into Gabrielle's house. Gabrielle who was pregnant with Carlos' baby at the time saw Caleb in her house and ran away in horror and fell down the stairs and lost her child. Mike Delfino later cauhgt Caleb outside and he was taken away to a mental instition where Betty and Matthew later rescued him. A police officer who was looking into a murder case of Melanie Foster confronted Caleb in the basement and when Calab refused to go upstairs the police officer went down to get him but a lose step caused the police officer to fall thorugh and set off his gun which shot him in the chest. Betty and Matthew later hid the mans body in his car but when Susan Mayer was forced off the road and crashed into the car the boot opened up and everyone saw the body. Edie and the others began to suspect the Applewhite's may have something to do with it. Betty later punishes Matthew for trying to trick Caleb into doing something bad to Danielle Van De Kamp which Danielle and Matthew planned to get Caleb out of the way. Betty locked him in the basement but Danielle broke him out by knocking Betty unconious and the two fled and ran away. Caleb was later arrested due to Melanie Foster's death and a photo was shown with a jacket someone had placed over her. Betty confessed the jacket did not belong to Caleb but her other son Matthew. Danielle and Matthew broke into Bree's house to steal money but Bree who recieved a warning from Betty telling her Matthew was a murderer confronted them and when Matthew was about to shoot Bree for not letting them past a police officer shot Matthew in the chest who falled and died. Betty and Caleb soon left Fairview to start afresh.

A secret in the third season was based around Orson Hodge Bree's new husband and the disapperance of his ex-wife Alma Hodge. Susan, Lynette and Gabrielle tried to warn Bree about Orson telling her they think he murdered his ex-wife Alma due to Carolyn Bigsby's speculations. Bree denies this and marries Orson anyway. Mid-way through the third series Orson's mother Gloria Hodge comes to visit and it's revealed in a flashback that Gloria had killed Orson's mistress Monique Poiler. And Orson helped his mother cover up the death by using Orson's guilty conscience of his father's death. It's later reveaed that Alma Hodge is alive and well and she moves into Fairview to Bree and Orson's dismay. But the storyline is later solved when Gloria attempts to kill Bree. She locks Alma in an attic and when she tries to warn Danielle on Gloria's plans to kill Bree she falls from the roof and dies. Orson manages to stop Gloria from killing Bree and it's revealed it had been Gloria who killed Orson's father. Gloria suffered a stroke and was completely paralazed. Orson placed Gloria next to Alma's body and using the bag of Monique's teeth and Alma's fake sucide note from a previous attempt of Alma's to seduce Orson the police said that Alma was Moniques murderer and Gloria was taken into hospital and could not move or speak but only think.

The secret in Season Four revolved around the new Mayfair family. Where Dylan Mayfair tries to discover more about her father but her mother Katherine just tells her he was a bad man but Katherine appears to have covered up an incident and before dying Katherine's Aunt Lillian leaves a note for Dylan which Katherine's new husband Adam Mayfair later discovers, he tells Katherine he knows that what happened was actually her fault and not her husbands as she says it was and he leaves her. Katherine chucks the note into the fire, later that night Dylan puts the note back together and discovers the truth. Katherine's ex-husband Wayne Brady tracks down Dylan and begins to liaison with her secretly from her mother. Eventually Katherine finds out and everything seems fine but Wayne hasn't changed and is still the manipulative and angry man that he once was. He eventually discovers that Dylan is not his real daughter after having suspicions and then having a DNA test secretly done revealing that she is neither his nor Katherine's daughter. In the final episode/s the mystery is revealed. The night that Katherine had hit Wayne on the head with the candlestick and fallen asleep,the original Dylan had tried to get the doll that Wayne had brought to her which Katherine had taken away earlier and put it on top of the cabinet. It fell on top of her and killed her, causing the gouge in the wooden floor. Knowing that Wayne would try to blame her and do something, she and her aunt buried her behind the house in the woods. She then found an orphan girl that was the same age and lloked exactly like the orginal Dylan in a Romanian orphanage and took her home to raise her as her own.

The Mystery of season 5 is revolved around David Dash, Dave. Dave was once married to Lila Dash, he aso had a daughter Paige. One night when Dave is working his young daughter asks for ice cream. Unable to go because of work Dave asks Lila to take Paige. So she does, and on the way on Cantebury Road, Lila crashes into Susan and Mike killing herself and her daughter. About 5 years later Dave has changed his name to Dave Williams and has married Edie Britt. He now lives on Wisteria Lane. Dave holds a deadly secret and he wants to kill Mike because he thinks Mike killed his family, but when Susan and Dave have a heart to heart She tells Dave that she was driving the car that Lila crashed into. Now Dave wants to kill Susan's and Mike's child M.J so they will suffer like he suffered. Dave plans to do this on a fishing trip on which Susan and M.J will go on while Mike and Katherine are going to get married in Vegas. Before they leave Dave tapes an explanation on why he has to kill M.J, he then Gives it to Mike. While at the airport Mike watches the tape and leaves Katherine. He has to save his family. Mike calls Susan and tells her the truth about Dave. Susan gets Dave to pull over and she and M.J run through the forest but Dave finds them and hold Susan at gunpoint in the car. Dave explains that when mike comes to the rescue, on Cantebury road he will crash into them and kill them. When they arrive at the road Dave kicks Susan out of the car and unfastens M.J's seatbelt. Susan the yells "What would your daughter think of you?!!!" Dave sees Paige in the rearview window and lets M.J out of the car. When Mike zooms down the road Susan thinks she has wittnessed her sons murder but she hadn't M.J had escaped.Dave, still alive in the car has a flashback of when Lila left to got get Ice Cream except he stops them and says he can make smores instead. Later on Dave is put into a mental hospital in Fairview
[edit] Other Minor Secrets
- Susan's mother lied that Susan's father died in a war, and she didn't really know who Susan's father really was, this secret was revealed to Susan by Susan's mother.
- Mike held a secret that he was a former drug dealer and he killed a cop in self-defense. This secret was revealed to Susan by Dedrie's sister.
- Bree tried to keep a secret in the second series that she was not addicted to alcohol. This secret was later discovered by Lynette who helped Bree beat her addiction.
- Andrew tried to deny in the first series about being gay. This secret was revealed when Susan caught Andrew kissing a guy in a pool and Andrew revealing his sexuality to his parents.
- Adam Mayfair lied about his affair with Slyvia Greene.
- Austin McCann lied to Julie Mayer when he had an affair with Danielle.
- Lynette lied to Tom about that she was seeing their cook on their restaurant. Tom found about that later.
