Karl Mayer is Susan's ex-husband and father of Julie and Evan. He is a well known lawyer and womanizer.

[edit] Season One
Karl first appears in the Pilot in a flashback and shows how he left years of marriage with Susan Mayer for his secretary called Brandi. Later on the series Susan and Brandi apologize to each other and become friends, Karl soon breaks up with Brandi and starts dating Edie Britt.
[edit] Season Two
Susan also discovers that he flirted with Edie while they were married. He dates Edie Britt during season 1 and 2 but is jealous of Mike Delfino and tries twice to get back with Susan. He even goes so far as to lie to Susan and say that he was breaking it off with Edie, which led to him and Susan having sex. Later Bree Hodge hires Karl to stop her son, Andrew Van de Kamp from blackmailing her. Karl tells Andrew that even though Bree did witness George Williams die, she won't even face a courtroom. Andrew says that he will just make up stories or give her a "public humiliation" and Bree is horrified, Karl asks Bree for more tea and as Bree leaves for the kitchen, Karl grabs hold of Andrew and puts him against the wall and he says that he was a good friend to his father Rex Van de Kamp and said he knew if Rex was alive then he would force Andrew to behave. Andrew backchats once more but Karl grabs him by the cheek and says that if he doesn't stop blackmailing Bree and not giving her the respect she deserves then he will take care of Andrew himself. Bree overhears from the kitchen and lets out a sigh of relief.
Later in Season 2, Karl offers to marry Susan when she needs a life-saving surgery so that she can use his health insurance to pay for it, but they plan to divorce soon after Susan's surgery. Karl becomes jealous of Susan and Dr. Ron's relationship and he knows that Susan had not yet mentioned her and Mike's past, so Karl breaks open a pipe under the sink and Dr. Ron gets Mike and he learns that Susan had lied to him and Karl watched happily as Dr. Ron dumped her. Later in the series, Karl asks Edie to marry him; however, Edie learns about Karl and Susan's secret wedding. As revenge for Karl sleeping with Susan, Edie burns Susan's house down, prompting Karl to buy her a new one as another attempt to get her back, only to be stopped by Mike Delfino.
[edit] Season Three
In season 3, both Susan and Edie have moved on and he is mostly absent, returning only in the episode "Children and Art" to play the bad cop for Julie and Austin. This backfires when he gets mad at Susan for dating a married English man whose wife is in coma.

When Susan goes to a Lamaze class, her and Julie both meet up with Karl. The reason why he is there is because his wife Marissa is pregnant.

Karl returns in season five to sign some paperwork for Julie's insurance and visit's Susan's house and meets her new boyfriend Jackson Braddok he comments on how Jackson is a behevian in nature. Karl once again reappears enrolling his new son evan in susan's art class and confronts susan about her criticizing his son's artwork which was depiting his mother being stabbed with a sword. Susan calls Karl to her home and shows him the drawing and he informs her that Marrissa left them because she could not handle being a mother. Currently Karl is raising Evan by himself.
Later Bree approaches Karl becayse she needs an excellent lawyer to help her divorce Orson whilst keeping what is rightfully hers. The two set up a fake break in at Bree's house however Orson finds out and begins to blackmail her. Karl then orders a guy to threaten Orson to tell him to let go. Bree confronts Karl over this and fires him Karl then kisses. Three months later at Mike Delfino's wedding Karl is a guest and sits behind Bree and Orson. Bree looks at Karl and the pair smile at each other.
[edit] Season Six
Bree and Karl continue to kiss at Karl's office when Bree starts to feel guilty. Karl insists that they make love on the couch in the office but Bree says that she wants to feel special. Karl then books the two into a fancy hotel but Bree sees someone she knows and demands that they leave. Karl then books them into a motel but Bree will not make love there either because of its filth and insists that they go sheet shopping. While shopping, Karl tells Bree that she is making all these excuses because she doesn't want the affair to go ahead because she'd rather be good than happy.
The morning of Susan and Mike's wedding, Bree sees Karl in his car and gets in. She says that she's booked them in to the motel and has already cleaned the bathroom and bought the sheets. She tells Karl that being guilty is worth being happy and the two kiss passionately. Karl and Bree later make love all night long.
The next morning, Bree tells Karl how she used to think that there had to be a romantic or spiritual meaning behind sex but now she knows there doesn't. Mike then rings Karl's phone telling him that Julie has been attacked. Karl then goes to the hospital straight away. Later, Bree visits and tells Karl that Susan can never know about them. Karl agrees and then kisses Bree. Just as the two are kssing, Julie wakes up from her coma and witnesses them kissing. Seconds later she loses conciousness again.
Later, Karl reappears at Julie's bedside. He asks Bree to join him in a hotel that night as he doesn't want to spend the night alone. Bree, who is feeling guilty about hurting Susan, agrees after seeing Susan and Mike kissing.
